How I work to capture your beautiful wedding day

The before, during and after of how I capture your beautiful wedding day

How do  I capture your beautiful wedding day at your Cotswold wedding? How I plan and work to capture your beautiful wedding day? What I do to let you know about The Lemon House Gloucestershire wedding photography? What do I do after your wedding day? If you are looking for a wedding photographer, then please read on to see how I work to capture your beautiful day.

I recognise that you have been dreaming of and planning your wedding day for a long time, in many cases. For me, it is very important that you feel that you are in control of your day and not being directed by your photographer. To get this balance, I think it is it is essential that you have a great relationship with me that will be there for the duration of your wedding planning, your wedding day and also after your wedding.

I am there to answer questions and offer guidance on any aspect of your wedding photography or any aspect of your wedding for that matter. I do love talking all things weddings and work with and can recommend lots of excellent suppliers in the industry.

All weddings are individual, unique and of course beautiful, and as such, you can expect the following from me.

Searching for and finding your Cotswold wedding photographer

Often in the first instance, you may be looking for someone who is local to the county, city or even venue that you have chosen.

wedding photographer cotswoldsP I N

Searches in google for ‘Gloucestershire Wedding Photographer’, ‘Cotswold Wedding Photographer’, ‘Kingscote Barn Wedding Photographer’, ‘wedding photographer in Gloucestershire’ or even ‘local wedding photographer’ should get you off to a good start. It is then down to you looking at their portfolio of work, their pricing and packages and of course very importantly their testimonials. Once you’ve narrowed that down to a few, then give them a call or contact them. My site is all geared up to provide you with all of the information and images to help you make an informed decision on whether you think I’ll be a good fit for your wedding.

Initial Discussion

We have an initial discussion after you have found and contacted me – please do let me know how you found out about me, so I know where those marketing blood, sweat and tears have worked. I work to promote my business through my website, Facebook, Instagram and Google+ as well as referrals and word of mouth. Our early discussion can be on the phone, Skype, FaceTime or face to face as soon as we have confirmed availability for your date. There is no obligation at all of course.

Meeting up

I love to meet face to face so I can hear lots more about your plans for your day. I will also discuss with you how I work to capture your day and show you more examples of some of my most recent weddings.

I do recommend you see a number of wedding photographers, as we all have different styles and personalities. Of course, at the end of this process, I hope that you pick me but don’t be afraid to let me know you have selected someone else and if you can, why you made that decision. You are so lucky in The Cotswolds / Gloucestershire area to have so many amazing photographers to choose from. In the end, It has to be the photographer that “feels” right to you and offers the service you want for your day.

Booking

If you decide to book with me, I will send you a wedding agreement containing the terms and conditions (which can be viewed in the client lounge) and pricing. I ask for a 25% booking fee to secure your date; payment options are pretty much all of the standard payment types including bank transfer, debit cards, credit cards or cheque – all apart from cake or wine – although I’m still considering those!

Once your date is confirmed and booked the next step is to relax and congratulate yourself on a job well done. You have ticked off another significant “to do” on your wedding plan.

Pre-wedding Shoot

The pre-wedding photo shoot is complimentary; I find this stage invaluable as it gives us a chance to get to know each other ahead of your day. You can see how I am behind the camera and I can capture some lovely shots of the two of you both to keep.

You can request the location for the shoot to take place at a site that is important to you, such as where your proposal took place, or somewhere else that is special to you both.

All of the hand-edited images are yours to keep from the session, and I’ll even create a complimentary signing board ready for your guests to sign at your wedding.

Further information about the pre-wedding shoot and preparing for it can be found on my blog here.

Final payment

Four weeks before the wedding the final balance is due – this can be paid earlier if required or in instalments – just give me a call to discuss.

Planning

We will be chatting/be emailing reasonably regularly at this point to discuss ideas for your wedding photographs. I will also be asking for final timing of the day – nothing too formal or detailed – usually start time, location for bridal preparation etc. I will also ask you for your formal / must have photo list for me to capture on the day. Please bear in mind that I will capture your story, but I do recommend that you have some family shots, e.g. your two families together, generation photo, bride with the bridesmaid, groom with best man and ushers etc. Don’t worry I’ll give you a list of ideas. There is a simple online form that I send to you to complete this information about a month before the day.

Wedding Rehearsal

The day before.

Lasborough Church PoldarkP I N

If you are having a church ceremony then normally a day or so before the wedding you will have a rehearsal, I like to attend this so I can have a brief chat to the vicar about where I can stand during the service. If you are having a civil ceremony, then I have this chat with the registrar on the day of the wedding.

The Wedding Day

The big day has arrived.

First dance at Cadbury House wedding bristiolP I N

I will turn up at the agreed time to capture bridal preparation. I will be with you for the rest of the day and most of the evening, but I stress I will not be interrupting your day, I will be unobtrusive but always there for questions, encouragement and a big smile. Rest assured I will be working hard to capture all of those beautiful moments of your day.

At some point in the evening – well after the first dance, usually around 10 pm, I will come over to you to see if there is anything else you would like me to capture for you. If not then it is time to say goodbye and to have a hug with the bride and a firm handshake (or a hug) with the groom. You will then carry on with the party to the small hours I’m sure.

I will return home and do a full backup of all the photographs, to my editing suite, also to a further backup hard disk and to a memory stick which goes into a fire safe until your wedding photographs have been fully edited and delivered to you. I know how precious these images are!

Editing your wedding photographs

Editing is a large part of my work during the weeks following your wedding. I start by selecting the best images that I am going to use to tell the story of your wedding day.  Every one of these chosen photographs is edited. I use a light touch approach to editing, with few effects being used. I go for sharp, colourful images.I do some photoshop work as required; this is usually removal of fire escape signs and other distractions as well as removing any excessive shine on faces. After final cropping of the image I then decide which ones are going remain colour, be turned into black and white or provide one of each.

Bride at Dundas castleP I N

All of the images are then exported from my editing suite and uploaded onto your USB stick and your online web gallery ready for you and your family to view, share and print as you wish.

Delivery of your photographs

On return from your honeymoon, I will contact you to let you know how the editing process is progressing; I will aim to complete your photos and deliver them to your password protected gallery between 2 – 4 weeks after the wedding day.

I will send you access details for the gallery which you can share with family and friends and also send you a USB with all of your high-resolution photographs for you to share and enjoy always.

Ongoing customer service

Anything else you need, I’m always here to talk albums or to have a look at the type of wedding book I can build for you please click here for an example and then please feel free to contact me to discuss your requirements.

I suggest that you spend some time after your wedding getting to know your photographs and then, if you decide you do want an album, contact me to look at options then I will ask you choose around 150 images. We will then meet at my studio and design the album face to face. Delivery of my handmade in the UK leather albums takes around 4 – 6 weeks from sign off of the final design.

Dundas Castle Winter Wedding

Emma and Graham were married in a stunning Dundas Castle Winter Wedding, at South Queensferry Edinburgh on the 30th December 2017.

On a snowy day in Edinburgh, Emma and Graham and their family and friends gathered at The Dakota Hotel, a cool boutique hotel in South Queensferry the night before their wedding for an informal drinks reception.

The next day started bright and early with bridal prep starting at The Dakota before the girls moved over to the Castle for final preparations and dressing.

The whole family, but especially Emma and her Mum had spent lots of time and effort on homemade features including the beautiful cake, bridesmaid dresses, table centres and many other touches.

Final preparation at the castle was great fun with the boys getting ready in one wing of the castle and the girls in the other. The exchange or pre-wedding gifts between Emma and Graham was an emotional period for both along with Emma giving out gifts to her Mum and bridesmaids.

The ceremony was to take place in the oldest part of the castle, the 600 year old Auld Keep which was beautifully decorated with candles and flower petals for the day.

Lead by a lone piper with the bell of the Auld Keep ringing, the bridal party progressed from the main part of the castle to the Keep into the ceremony hall where Graham, his groomsmen and all of the guests were waiting to receive them.

After the ceremony, we had the opportunity to go to the roof for the breathtaking (quite literally it was a freezing cold day) view of the bridges over the Firth of Forth.

Then onto the drinks reception to warm up and speeches on the magnificent staircase of the castle. The speech by Emma’s son had everyone in fits of laughter and more than a few tears were shed as well. They are such a warm loving family and it was a real pleasure getting to know them in the run-up to their wedding day.

After photos in the Castle next to the Christmas tree, it was time to be piped down to the wedding breakfast. The food was amongst the best this photographer has ever tasted with the most mouth-watering and melt-in-the-mouth blade of beef.

Dancing the night away to a Ceilidh Folk Band we were all blown away by their energy and I tell you, amplified bagpipes! with a full band sound pretty darned amazing. Well done to all of the guests who lasted the many rounds of dancing.

Emma and Graham had one final surprise for their guests, they had organised a full Scottish marching band for the beating of the retreat at Midnight in the grounds of the castle.

After that, the guests started to leave for home and hotels after a wonderful wedding. Some of the guests were staying overnight in the castle so there was time for a nice dram of scotch and a cup of tea and cake to end the night.

A summary slideshow of the wedding can be seen here.

I wish  Emma and Graham and their lovely family every happiness for their future together – it really was a pleasure capturing your day.

I’m looking forward to seeing Emma and Graham again soon to design their wedding album.

The Worcester College Oxford and Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons Wedding of Sarah & Alex

Alex and Sarah married in the stunning gilded chapel at Worcester College, Oxford on a beautiful sunny day in August last year. Sarah graduated from the college and as a result, was able to use the chapel and college grounds for her wedding.

They held their reception at Raymond Blanc’s prestigious Belmond Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton near Oxford.

Sarah and Alex laid on a Routemaster double-decker to take their guests from the Ceremony back to the Reception. The bus was also a special treat for Sarah’s Dad who is a big fan of the Routemaster. He was able to drive the bus for a while which he thoroughly enjoyed.

The food was an essential part of their day, and with five courses they wanted to take their time to savour every fork full. I was given full access to the kitchens to photograph the preparation and serving of each dish.

It is important to me to capture the full story of any wedding day including the many candid and special moments between the couple and their guests as well as the more traditional family groups. Sarah and Alex were keen to get plenty of photographs in the beautiful gardens of Le Manoir of themselves and their guests and planned extra time into the day to allow everyone time to explore and relax in the grounds.

I wish Sarah and Alex a wonderful future together.

Paul – The Lemon House

Lovely words from the bride and groom:

Dear Paul, I just wanted to drop you a line to say how delighted we are with the wedding photos. They perfectly capture the day and are exactly what we had hoped for. We will certainly treasure them forever. Thank you so much for all your effort at the engagement shoot, on the day and in post-production. All your hard work is much appreciated. Most of all it was a pleasure to have such a friendly face behind the camera. Best wishes Sarah and Alex xxx  Sarah and Alex were married at Worcester College Oxford followed by a reception at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons

Cadbury House Christmas Wedding

I met Helenna and Stu for the first time at Coffe #1 in Thornbury back in January 2016, from that moment I knew they were a couple that I would love to work with. The plans for their Christmas 2017 wedding, their story, their aspirations they have as a family, everything about them had me hooked. I was delighted to hear a short time after our meeting that they had chosen me to capture their day.

Helenna’s beautiful engagement ring came from the Jewelry quarter in Birmingham, and they had another trip up there to design a matching interlocking wedding ring at about the same time as we had a pre-wedding shoot on Minchinhampton common. During what we hoped was going to be a kite festival and spectacular on the common – which would have made a lovely backdrop – the wind disappeared and as a result, so did all the kites. A beautiful afternoon none the less. This is the photograph Helenna and Stu chose from the pre-wedding shoot for their signing board which all of the guests added messages to on their wedding day.

Pre-wedding photo shoot by the lemon house on minchinhampton commopnP I N

The wedding day itself, the 23rd December 2017, soon came around – time always flies during wedding planning I find. I urge you all to take your time to enjoy this process as much as you can. There are many lovely things to savour such as finalising flower designs, makeup and hair trials and of course food tasting.

On the morning of the wedding, Helenna gave Stu a scrapbook of their story together so far; I was privileged to help deliver that to Stu who was just a few rooms away getting ready with his groomsmen and Helenna’s dad. After the speeches, Stu gave Helenna a beautiful quilt made from quilted squares made by hand from many friends and family. Helenna’s daughter’s gifts were teddy bears made from the material of her beautiful Abigail Westrup wedding dress and veil. A unique gift for the girls to treasure forever. These were beautiful moments.

The hair and makeup artists were a pleasure to work with during bridal preparation, and it was soon time to capture Helenna in her final dress preparations and then her father seeing her for the first time – I always love that moment.

The wedding ceremony itself was full of happy tears (that includes the best men), a beautiful ceremony with vows that meant the world to Helenna and Stu and everyone attending.

The entrance of the bridal party and the recessional of the bride and groom were accompanied by Vocal Works Gospel Choir who also stayed for the drinks reception and canapes and were well received by everyone. Highly recommended.

Videography on the day was generously donated by a lovely guy who is a family friend of Helenna and Stu -Andy Grierson – who works all over the world directing and producing sports coverage for the BBC. It was a pleasure working with him and also meeting his lovely wife to be Sue. You can see him in action in one of the photos below with lots of smart kit.

Stu has two beautiful daughters who were so lovely and supportive on the day to their dad, and I really enjoyed meeting and photographing them. The four lovely girls that make up Stu and Helenna’s new family are exceptional and a  real credit to Helenna and Stu.

The wedding breakfast was an afternoon tea feast which everyone thoroughly enjoyed – including this photographer 🙂 Credit to Cadbury House for the fantastic food provided.

The Christmas theme continued throughout the day with beautiful table decor by Elizabeth Weddings. Winter themed flowers, mistletoe ball and bouquets by1st Choice Florists and a beautiful and delicious gingerbread cake by a family friend from Heaven Baked.

The evening kicked off to the first dance and then lots of dancing to the Hot Hats wedding band with the fabulous Caricaturist Ian @parody portraits also proving very popular with everyone. I even managed to get the bride and groom out on a very chilly December evening to do some shots in the grounds of Cadbury House.

I feel so lucky to have had the pleasure of capturing Helenna and Stu’s wedding day as well as getting to know them so well over the last couple of years.  I am looking forward to seeing them again next month to begin the design of their wedding album over lots of tea and biscuits.

Much love to you both,

Paul x

Lovely words from the bride and groom:

If we could give more than 5 stars we would. Paul was hands down the warmest, most attentive listener when we met him during our search for a photographer for our wedding. He’s been with us every step of the way, interested in my boards on Pinterest, sharing ideas between each other, even delivering the gift I’d made my husband for the wedding morning. Paul wasn’t just a supplier at our wedding, he was a friend. He blended in with the guests and wasn’t one of those annoying in your face photographers putting you into cringe-worthy poses. The photos are absolutely beautiful. Paul must have been everywhere to capture what he did. If you’re reading this and not sure who to choose for your wedding photography, truly look no further. My husband and I said I think Paul would do this job as a hobby if he wasn’t paid. He was so engaged, interested and excited about our wedding he gave us a run for our money! We can’t thank him enough. Helenna & Stu were married at Cadbury House, near Bristol

Purton House Wedding

The Purton House Wedding of Tracy & Antonio took place in November 2017 and what a treat it was for everyone.

This was a wonderful mix of Spanish and British with many of Antonio’s family flying in from Spain. The wedding ceremony took place in Cricklade, a beautiful catholic service with some lovely Spanish and British hymns.

After the ceremony Antonio and Tracy stopped off to visit Tracy’s grandmother at a local home which was a very special moment for everyone. The wedding favours for guests were contributions to The Alzheimer’s Society and everyone proudly wore their blue pins in support of the charity.

It was lovely to work with DB Wedding Cars who are fellow Whitewed approved suppliers. They looked after the couple exquisitely.

The food at Purton House by Cotswold Cooks was a-ma-zing! Everyone commented on the quality of the homestyle cooking with the roast pork being a particular favourite along with the Mezze platter of cold meats and plenty of Cava and Spanish wines to wash it all down.

One of the bridesmaids gave a wonderful performance of Hallelujah with words specific to Tracy and Antonio, it was a lovely moment to witness.

The evening entertainment was provided by a very talented pianist, singer and it turns out Elvis impersonator, who had everyone singing and dancing along including one of the very talented cooks who actually has a terrific voice.

Purton house really was a fantastic venue for this beautiful wedding. I thoroughly enjoyed capturing the story of the day for Tracy & Antonio. I just want to thank the couple, the guests and everyone at Purton House for their kindness and hospitality on the day.

Wishing Tracy and Antonio every happiness together.

Paul x

A little about Purton house from their website.

Purton House is a unique venue and family home, located in Wiltshire, England.

The house dates from the mid 19C and was acquired by the Barker family in 1974.

The family have been running events here for over 20 years, but in more recent years we have opened up the main house for small weddings, private parties, corporate events and photo shoots.

The venue includes a historic house, event field, clay shooting area, organic farm and farm shop. They produce their own organic beef, pork and vegetables.

What you will find is a relaxed, if somewhat eccentric family, with a kick off your boots and come on in approach.

Purton House is ideal for small intimate weddings for 50 guests or larger events using the house for reception drinks and the grounds for a marquee.  The package can include use of the main bridal suite and two further bedrooms for guests if required.

Talia (daughter) runs her thriving catering business, the Cotswold Cooks, from Purton House Organics.  Self taught cook (not chef, she hates that label), Talia thrives on quirky and unique weddings. Royalty, Arsenal Football Club and Polo Tournaments are among her grander events, but she’s more at home cooking, baking and bottling for couples who inspire her.
